Sanitary Tri-Clamps (Heavy Duty 13MHHM / High Pressure 13MHP)

The clamp is the structural backbone of any hygienic coupling. A failure here is not just a leak; it is a potential projectile hazard and a guaranteed sterility breach. Sunhyings manufactures Investment Cast Sanitary Clamps designed to withstand the thermal expansion forces of SIP (Steam-In-Place) cycles without loosening. Unlike stamped or light-duty clamps that deform under torque, our 13MHHM (Single Pin) and 13MHP (Bolted) series maintain uniform seal compression around the ferrule flange ($20^\circ$ bevel angle), preventing gasket intrusion and ensuring the connection remains rated for system pressures up to 40 Bar (depending on size/model).

1. Investment Casting vs. Stamping Cheap clamps are often stamped from sheet metal, leading to warping under load. Sunhyings clamps are produced via Investment Casting (Lost Wax Process). This results in a solid, dense grain structure with superior tensile strength. The cast profile is rigid enough to transfer the torque from the wingnut directly into compressive force on the gasket, without the clamp body yielding or “opening up.”

2. The “Hinge” Failure Point The pivot pin (rivet) is the weakest point of a hinged clamp. We utilize a reinforced, 304 stainless steel rivet with an optimized diameter to prevent shear failure. The hinge tolerance is tight to ensure the two clamp halves align perfectly on the ferrule flange, preventing “scissoring” which damages the gasket.

3. Safety in High-Pressure Lines (13MHP) For critical applications (e.g., WFI loops or autoclave outlets), wing-nut clamps present a risk of accidental opening. Our 13MHP Bolted High-Pressure Clamps utilize silicon bronze nuts (to prevent stainless galling) and require a wrench to tighten. This acts as a lockout mechanism, ensuring the line cannot be opened by hand without authorization/tools.

Procurement Alert: The 1/2″ and 3/4″ sizes share a flange. The 1.0″ and 1.5″ sizes share a flange. Verify “Flange OD” to order correctly.

1. Torque Specification

  • Single Pin (Wingnut): Hand-tighten until the gasket is slightly compressed, then apply an additional 90° turn. Do not use “cheater bars” on wingnuts.

  • Bolted (13MHP): Must be torqued to specification (typically 20 ft-lbs for 1.5″-2″ sizes) to achieve the rated pressure.

2. Galling Prevention

  • Stainless steel threads (bolt and nut) are prone to “galling” (cold welding) under high torque. We recommend applying a nickel-based anti-seize lubricant or using our optional Brass/Bronze nuts which naturally prevent galling.

3. Vibration Management

  • In pump outlets or vibrating machinery, standard wingnuts can back off. For these zones, specify Spring-Loaded Clamps or use Lock Washers with bolted clamps to maintain preload.

FAQ

13MHHM is a Heavy Duty, Single-Pin clamp with a wingnut for quick, tool-free assembly, suitable for general process lines. 13MHP is a High-Pressure clamp secured by two bolts and nuts (brass or stainless). 13MHP provides significantly higher pressure ratings and safety, as it cannot be loosened by hand.

This is caused by thermal cycling. As the stainless steel expands during heating and contracts during cooling, the gasket compresses (taking a “set”). When the system cools, the clamping force decreases. For steam lines, use Live-Loaded (Spring) Clamps or re-torque bolted clamps after the first cycle.

Generally, yes. The flange OD for a 2″ ASME BPE ferrule and a DIN 32676 DN50 ferrule are both 64.0mm. However, always verify the Flange OD dimension before installation, as ISO standards may differ (e.g., ISO 1127 DN50 is often smaller).

Yes. As a manufacturer, we offer volume pricing for pallet quantities (e.g., 500+ units). 304 SS is the industry standard for the clamp body since it does not contact the product, offering a cost-effective solution compared to 316 SS without compromising structural strength.

Pressure ratings drop significantly as diameter increases. A standard 4-inch Single Pin (13MHHM) clamp is typically rated for only 200-250 PSI at room temperature. If your application requires higher pressure at 4″, you must upgrade to a 13MHP Bolted Clamp or a specialized high-pressure fitting.
