Connection Types & Selection Guide

1. Concentric vs. Eccentric Selection

  • Concentric Swage Nipples: Used primarily in vertical pipe lines. The centerlines of both ends match, maintaining a smooth flow path. Ideally suited for pump discharge lines.

  • Eccentric Swage Nipples: Used in horizontal pipe lines. The offset design allows the bottom of the pipe to remain flat (flat-bottom), which prevents the accumulation of fluids or trapped air. Essential for pump suction lines.

2. End Preparation Types (The “Ends” Code)

  • TBE (Threaded Both Ends): NPT threads on both ends. Used for screw-in connections.

  • PBE (Plain Both Ends): No threads, square cut. Used for socket-weld connections.

  • BBE (Beveled Both Ends): Beveled edges. Used for butt-weld connections (typically for sizes 2″ and larger).

  • Hybrid (PLE/TSE): Plain Large End / Threaded Small End. Often used when transitioning from a welded line to a threaded instrument or valve.

FAQ

While both components connect pipes of different diameters, the key difference lies in their manufacturing standards and manufacturing processes. A Swage Nipple is typically forged from solid bars or heavy wall pipes according to MSS SP-95, making it suitable for high-pressure and small-bore applications. A Butt Weld Reducer is formed from pipes or plates according to ASME B16.9, designed primarily for flow efficiency in larger piping systems.

MSS SP-95 is the governing Standard Practice that defines the dimensions, tolerances, materials, and marking requirements for Swage Nipples and Bull Plugs (NPS 1/8 through NPS 12).

When a product is marked with “SP95”, it signifies full compliance with the following critical quality controls:

  • Dimensional Accuracy: Length and end-to-end tolerances match industry standards.

  • Material Traceability: The fitting is marked with a Heat Number traceable to the raw material’s Mill Test Certificate.

  • Pressure Competence: The design proof test ensures the fitting can withstand pressures equivalent to seamless pipe of the same material and schedule.

Yes. We manufacture Swage Nipples in standard heavy wall thicknesses like Schedule 160 and XXS (Double Extra Strong), as well as non-standard thicknesses for extreme pressure applications (e.g., 10,000 psi hydraulic systems).

We utilize two distinct manufacturing processes depending on the requirement:

  1. Hot Swaging: For standard XXS fittings, we use a radial forging process that naturally thickens the wall as the diameter is reduced, ensuring a dense grain structure.

  2. Machining from Solid Bar: For wall thicknesses exceeding XXS or non-standard IDs, we machine the component directly from solid forged bars (ASTM A105 or A182). This allows for unlimited customization of the bore size to meet specific corrosion allowance or pressure needs.

Our stainless steel fittings (such as 304/304L and 316/316L) are supplied with an EN 10204 3.1 Material Test Certificate (MTC) that explicitly states compliance with NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 for sour service.

Please note that there is no separate “NACE Certificate”; compliance is verified through three specific data points on the MTC:

  • Hardness Control: Confirmed hardness of ≤ 22 HRC to prevent Sulfide Stress Cracking (SSC).

  • Heat Treatment: Proof of Solution Annealing and quenching to dissolve carbides.

  • Chemical Composition: Strict control of Sulfur and Phosphorus levels to ensure material purity.
