The current F3125/F3125M-26 public scope identifies Grade A325 and A490 heavy hex bolts in nominal diameters from 1/2 to 1-1/2 inches, while the metric Grade A325M and A490M products cover M12 through M36. Inch and metric requirements are separately defined; a dimensional conversion does not establish specification equivalence.
Under historical ASTM A325 requirements, bolts between 1/2 and 1 inch in diameter had a specified minimum tensile strength of 120 ksi. For bolts larger than 1 inch, that minimum was 105 ksi.
| Greater than 1 inch through 1-1/2 inches | 105 ksi | 120

The safest purchasing approach is to preserve the original engineering intent while translating the old terminology into an unambiguous current specification.
That begins with the drawing, not the supplier’s catalog.
A legacy drawing may identify the bolt grade and diameter but leave important information in general notes, a structural specification, or a separate fastener schedule. These documents need to be read together before the purchasing description is revised.
For example, a drawing note might specify ASTM A325 bolts while the project specification separately controls whether the bolting is plain or coated, whether weathering steel is required, and how installation and inspection are performed.
Changing only the drawing note to “ASTM F3125” would leave important questions unanswered.
An illustrative legacy-drawing review
Hypothetical example — not a SUNHY customer project or tested product.
Assume an older steel-structure drawing includes the following purchasing description:
ASTM A325 Type 1 heavy hex bolts, 1-1/4-inch nominal diameter, 5-inch nominal length, plain finish.
The buyer is preparing a new order for replacement components and wants to use the current specification.
An initial procurement clarification could identify the proposed product as:
ASTM F3125/F3125M-26, Grade A325, Type 1, heavy hex, 1-1/4-inch nominal diameter × 5-inch nominal length, plain finish — subject to confirmation of the required thread configuration, mating components, inspection requirements, and engineering approval.
This proposed wording illustrates how to make the grade and product form explicit. It is not a completed purchase specification or an authorization to substitute the new product into the existing structure.
The original drawing and governing project specification must still establish whether the proposed bolt’s dimensional requirements, threaded length, material classification, and mechanical properties are appropriate. The project engineer must address any differences that affect the approved design or connection arrangement.
This is particularly relevant because the example uses a bolt larger than 1 inch, where the historical A325 minimum tensile requirement differed from the later F3125 Grade A325 requirement.
A supplier quotation showing the correct modern grade is useful evidence of what is being offered. It does not, by itself, resolve the engineering acceptability of that substitution.
What should appear in the RFQ or purchase order?
For a new order, the RFQ should be specific enough that the supplier and buyer can identify the same product and verify delivery against the same requirements.
The essential information includes:
- Applicable standard and edition: Identify F3125/F3125M and the required edition, or retain an explicitly approved legacy specification where the contract requires it.
- Grade, Type, and Style: State the applicable designation rather than requesting F3125 generically.
- Bolt dimensions: Specify nominal diameter, length, thread requirements, quantity, and any drawing-controlled deviations.
- Finish or coating: State the finish and any applicable coating specification. Do not assume every coating is permitted for every strength grade or assembly.
- Mating components: Identify the required nuts, washers, or matched assemblies using the project-approved specifications.
- Verification and documentation: State the inspection, test-report, traceability, and certificate requirements applicable to the order.
- Project references: Include the current approved drawing revision and any special structural bolting or installation requirements.
Each item prevents a different form of ambiguity.
A missing Grade can lead to quotations for materially different strength categories. An unspecified coating can create a mismatch with the intended installation conditions or mating components. Missing thread-length information can be especially troublesome for unusual configurations, even when nominal bolt diameter and overall length are correct.
When a replacement is involved, the purchaser should also distinguish between a product specification update and a design change.
A product may meet the current ASTM requirements yet still require approval before it is used in a connection originally designed, detailed, or approved under another specification. The purchasing department can establish the proposed technical differences, but it should not independently approve a change that belongs to the Engineer of Record or the project’s designated engineering authority.
A purchase order is only useful if the delivered bolts can be checked against it.
Consider a hypothetical delivery with correct A325 head marks but a report covering a different finished-bolt lot. The stamp cannot bridge that documentary gap. Compare package identifiers with the manufacturing and test records, segregate the affected delivery and request a traceable correction. The fastener lot-control principles explain the record chain; structural acceptance still follows the project requirements.
The first check is product identity. Bolt-head markings can help identify the specified grade and manufacturer, but they do not establish every requirement of a finished structural bolting assembly. The purchaser must interpret the markings under the applicable edition and verify that they correspond to the ordered bolt type and configuration.
Dimensions require a separate check. A bolt marked with the expected grade can still be unsuitable if its nominal size, length, threaded portion, or special configuration differs from the approved drawing.
Material and mechanical-property evidence serves another purpose. When the purchase specification requires manufacturer test reports or traceability documents, those records should be reviewed for the applicable product designation, lot identification, test results, and consistency with the supplied material.
Such records are not interchangeable with dimensional inspection or installation verification. For instance, a material test report may support specified mechanical properties without proving that the correct nut and washer were supplied or that the assembled joint was installed properly.
Check the complete bolting assembly
The mating components matter because structural bolting is not just an isolated bolt-strength question.
ASTM A563/A563M addresses applicable carbon and alloy steel nut requirements, while ASTM F436/F436M covers hardened steel washers. Those specifications must be used with the appropriate grades, dimensions, and assembly conditions identified by the governing project requirements.
The RCSC مواصفات الوصلات الإنشائية باستخدام البراغي عالية المقاومة separately addresses structural joint design, installation, and inspection. It provides the connection-level framework rather than replacing the ASTM material and product specifications.
The 2025 RCSC edition also changed several installation provisions, including withdrawing the calibrated wrench installation method. This is an important reminder that a bolt grade accepted for procurement does not independently determine the installation procedure. Projects governed by another approved edition must be evaluated against their applicable documents.
The exact nuts, washers, coatings, and installation method therefore cannot be selected from bolt grade alone.
A practical receiving inspection should establish three distinct answers:
- Is the bolt the product ordered? Check identification, dimensions, grade/type/style, finish, and applicable manufacturing documentation.
- Are the mating components and assembly requirements correct? Match nuts, washers, coatings, and any assembly-specific requirements to the approved project documents.
- Does the supplied combination satisfy the required acceptance basis? Confirm specified records and inspection results, and refer engineering substitutions or discrepancies to the responsible authority.
An unresolved item should be recorded as a technical clarification rather than silently treated as acceptable because the bolt carries an A325 marking.
لـ structural bolt procurement, the meaningful transition from ASTM A325 to ASTM F3125 is completed when the buyer can identify the right current product, explain any differences from the historical requirements, and establish a documented acceptance route.
Where the project’s original A325 requirement remains ambiguous, obtain the necessary engineering clarification before approving a replacement.
